Santa Veneranda is celebrated in Angellara – by Antonella Casaburi

In the ancient village of Angellara, a hamlet of Vallo della Lucania, stands the evocative Church dedicated to Santa Veneranda, a Christian virgin and martyr born in Gaul in the 2nd century. The saint, who was imprisoned, tortured and finally killed during the persecution of Christians at the time of Emperor Antoninus Pius, is celebrated in many places in Italy. In Campania she is venerated in Ercolano, Moio della Civitella and Angellara. And it is here, in Angellara, that the church of the same name dedicated to her stands.

Following the sentence of decapitation on 26 July 143, the body of Santa Veneranda remained unburied and exposed to fairs. However, the saint's body remained miraculously intact until some Christians moved it to Ascoli Piceno, where it was venerated until the 14th century. In a subsequent era, on November XNUMX, a priest named Antimo transferred him to Rome.

Throughout Italy, Santa Veneranda is celebrated on 26 July (the day of her presumed death by decapitation) and 14 November is the day on which the transfer of the saint's relics from Ascoli Piceno to Rome, which took place in 1642, is commemorated.

Also in Angellara, in the Church of Santa Veneranda, a splendid church which boasts an extradosed dome from the 14th century, solemn celebrations are celebrated on XNUMX November in honor of the holy virgin and Christian martyr whose cult in Cilento it seems to be attributable to the Basilian Monks.
