The Gulf of Policastro

The Gulf of Policastro, located in southern Italy, is a coastal region that extends from Punta Iscolelli, in the municipality of Camerota, at Capo Bonifati in the municipality of Bonifati. It is characterized by the presence of imposing mountains such as Monte Bulgheria, Monte Coccovello and Monte San Biagio, which descend steeply onto the sea, creating a unique and evocative landscape. At the moment, the area includes the Marine Protected Area of Costa degli Infreschi and Masseta, while the Marine Protected Area of the Costa di Maratea is still being defined. The coastal landscape varies greatly along the gulf: after Sapri and around Maratea the coasts are high and rocky, while the central part near Policastro, Vibonati and Villammare is lower and sandy.

One of the distinctive elements of the gulf is the presence of historic towers, such as the Torre Iscoletti or Semaforo, a quadrangular structure located halfway up the coast. Another tower is located near Scario, attached to a two-story white building, on which the light number 2672 is positioned.

Continuing along the coast, you come across Capo Bianco, which delimits a square inlet with rocky coasts and hosts the territory of the municipality of Sapri. In the Calabrian part of the gulf there is the island of Dino, separated from the mainland by a short passage of water and characterized by dense vegetation and steep walls.

Capo Scalea is another important geographical feature of the gulf, presenting itself as a plateau that extends to the sea with steep coasts. Near the town of Scalea there is a dangerous shoal with outcropping rocks. Finally, the coast extends up to Capo di Bonifati, with the Island of Cirella to the south-west of Cirella offering temporary shelter thanks to an 11 meter seabed in the channel between the island and the mainland. Capo Tirone is surrounded by rocks and shallows up to about 300 meters from the coast.
