The town is located on the top of a mountain about 700 – 800 meters above sea level sea. The territory of the town is rich in woods, nature trails and caves. The municipality is crossed by the Calore Lucano river (passing through the gorges of Heat), a tributary of the Sele river.
The Calore Lucano river passes through the town's territory through a gorge, which can be visited via a route that leads to the nearby town of Felitto. Outside the gorges the river also forms a small lake called "Pozzo di Raffaele". The river is defined by many as the cleanest in Europe and is part of the list of sites of community importance for the Mediterranean biogeographical region, pursuant to Directive 92/43/EEC.
