THE DEER
The fallow deer originally belonged to a subfamily of a typical Chinese deer, characterized by having 3 peaks for each antler.

The first fallow deer (Dama sericus) was found in China in the late Pliocene, hence the birth of the Dama genus.

The appearance of the fallow deer in Europe dates back to approximately 700.000 years ago.

The Clacton fallow deer was completely different to the fallow deer we are used to seeing today.

It appeared decidedly larger, with males that could reach weights from 110 to 150 kg and with a complex antler.

The Clacton fallow deer has not always had a constant presence on our continent, due to the glaciations, which ultimately led to its extinction.

Between 600.000 and 150.000 years ago, the extinction of the Dama clactonian species gave way to the more modern species Dama dama.

Over the centuries, the species has been reintroduced into the old continent several times by man, both for hunting purposes and for escapes from the aristocratic estates where they were bred.

We currently find fallow deer all over the world and we can find perfectly adapted non-native populations in Siberia, the United States, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, South Africa and Canada.

In Europe there are 150.000 specimens and the largest populations are found in Great Britain and Germany.

The fallow deer has intermediate dimensions between roe deer and deer.

THEanimal it is equipped with a long tail even over 20 cm and with a design of an upside down anchor on the anal mirror, thus making it unmistakable.

The deer's cry is a roar, although listening to it it would seem more like a sort of "burp", which it makes during the mating period.

The fallow deer, if in good health and nutrition, can survive until the age of 15-17 years. (FURTHER READING)
