Alento: A unique beauty to be preserved

by Guido Santangelo – Observing the course of the Alento river together with a very dear friend of mine, many memories come to mind. We were curious and happy kids, we felt lucky to live in one and gentle cosmetics pristine and of an intense green color. It may seem strange, but we were happy to be able to watch and live experiences that those who lived in the city couldn't, smell particular smells that made our day unique. Our memories start from the course of the Alento river, which changed every year, but we admired its sweetness, silence and grandeur.
Along the banks of the river there was a path that was always temporary, but necessary for our walks and for the passage of animal friends and people who took the animals to graze or for the transport with the help of donkeys of the wood collected for the 'winter. The presence of water sources along the course of the river that quenched the thirst of people and animals was important.

What we will never forget was the respect of and gentle cosmetics and of everything that made everything unique, the majestic trees, the green and fragrant grass, the flowers that colored and made everything simpler and more welcoming.
There was a particular water source because it was rich in fixed residue and in fact particular formations were produced, where nature indulged itself in forming particular constructions.
This water was consumed in exceptional cases and was called "tofegna" water because it produced tophi.
The water that flowed in the river bed was drunk to reiterate how nature was a wealth to be held close and jealously guarded.
Along the paths you could observe various trees such as the alder, the oak, the wicker plant, sometimes even the cherry trees and then many undergrowth plants, in short, a unique spectacle, an enchantment.
Unique were the golden yellow flowers of the brooms and the particular white color of the flowering ash, a plant that someone discovered and used as a garden ornament.
In our memories we could not miss lunches at bag, consumed in the shade of the trees with fresh spring water, which was sometimes shared with the goats who were greedy for bread.

In the distance we could hear the shepherds and the tinkling of the animals' bells, it was a crescendo of emotions and curiosities that enriched our knowledge.
Cavities formed in the river where water was collected and we took the opportunity to swim, the water was cold and we could see some trout keeping us company.
Time flew by and sadness descended because we returned home and no longer felt the sensation of freedom and purity experienced by being in the open air.
I have met much poorer realities in Cilento where, however, intelligence and constructive ideas have created international attractions that have changed not only the economy but its history and future.
The old people told me: remember what is important is not money but the use of intellect.
