The Cilento coast – part three (video)

pollica-Acciaroli e Poplars. In addition to natural beauty, a splendid sea and seaside facilities, there is one more reason to visit Pollica: the memory of its mayor, Angelo Vassallo, killed for wanting to defend his municipality from environmental devastation and much more. This location, immersed in the national park and dominated by the peak of Mount Stella, is on the hills between Punta Licosa and the mouth of the river Breath. It is dominated by the beautiful square tower of the ancient castle of the Capano princes, renovated in 1610. «He was an old man who fished alone on a sailing boat in the Gulf Stream and it had been eighty-four days since he had caught a fish»: this is how the Ernest's famous novel Hemingway which seems to have been inspired by the suggestive atmospheres of Acciaroli.

Hemingway, famous author of The Old Man and the Sea, loved staying in this small town where the houses built on rocks emerging from the sea are connected to the road by walkways. The heart of the town is the picturesque port which offers an interesting glimpse into the traditional maritime activities of Cilento. The great tourist success has changed the appearance of the coastal centre, even if it has not managed to erase the charm that captured the imagination of the North American writer.

Acciaroli is divided between its tourist vocation and its passion for fishing, both vital resources for local economic development. Towards the south, 7 km from Acciaroli, in a bay closed between the hills, there is the marina of Pioppi, an ancient fishing village that has a prominent place in the local tourist panorama. Of interest is the Sea Museum in the Vinciprova palace, a typical example of baronial architecture dating back to the mid-XNUMXth century.
